India will host the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) in January 2026. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced this at the recent CSPOC Standing Committee Meeting in Guernsey. The event will focus on the role of artificial intelligence and social media in enhancing parliamentary processes. Birla also highlighted India’s economic and technological progress, inviting participants to experience the nation’s blend of cultural heritage and modern advancements.
About CSPOC: A Platform for Parliamentary Leaders
Established in 1969 by Canadian Speaker Lucien Lamoureux, CSPOC provides a forum for parliamentary leaders across the Commonwealth. Operating independently of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the conference meets every two years, alternating between full conferences and Standing Committee meetings. It serves as a platform to promote impartiality, share best practices, and strengthen parliamentary institutions.
India’s Historical Role in CSPOC
India has hosted the CSPOC three times previously—in 1970-71, 1986, and 2010. As the host for 2026, India aims to showcase its dedication to inclusivity and democracy. Speaker Om Birla emphasised the significance of global dialogue in addressing pressing challenges like climate change, terrorism, and cybercrime.
Agenda for the 2026 Conference
The Standing Committee, consisting of 15 members, will finalise the agenda for the upcoming conference. Key topics include sustainable development, governance, and the integration of technology in parliamentary processes. The focus on AI and social media reflects the need for modernising parliamentary operations and fostering transparency.
Inclusivity and Dialogue at the Core
Speaker Birla underlined the importance of inclusive parliamentary practices. He advocated for open dialogue to address global issues such as poverty, inequality, and malnutrition. The conference will encourage collaboration among member countries to find innovative solutions to these challenges.
Shaping the Future of Parliamentary Governance
The 2026 CSPOC is poised to influence the future of governance across the Commonwealth. By focusing on technology’s role in policy-making, the conference aims to inspire member nations to modernise their legislative processes. This event will serve as a platform for cooperation and knowledge-sharing, strengthening ties among Commonwealth countries and improving governance standards globally.
