The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) has introduced the MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing (TEAM) Initiative, aiming to bolster the digital presence of small businesses in India. Backed by a ₹277.35 crore budget over three years, the initiative plans to onboard 5 lakh micro and small enterprises, particularly focusing on women-led businesses, in collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

- Account handling.
This support aims to ensure small businesses can transition smoothly into the digital commerce ecosystem.
Role and Benefits of ONDC
The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) serves as a revolutionary platform connecting sellers and consumers directly through interconnected e-marketplaces.
Advantages of ONDC:
- Inclusivity: Provides small businesses equal access to a competitive digital marketplace.
- Transparency: Promotes consumer trust with an open environment.
- Cost Efficiency: Reduces reliance on dominant platforms, offering better price options.
- Innovation-Driven: Open-source architecture encourages creativity and adaptability.
Challenges for ONDC
Despite its promise, ONDC faces obstacles:
- Complexity: Its technical structure may overwhelm small-scale users.
- Customer Service Issues: Limited direct intermediary roles can complicate dispute resolution.
- Competition: Existing platforms with established consumer bases pose significant challenges.
Future Roadmap
To maximize ONDC’s potential, the government must:
- Invest in digital infrastructure and promote digital literacy.
- Launch targeted outreach campaigns to onboard small sellers.
- Develop a robust dispute resolution framework to ensure trust and reliability.
By addressing these challenges, the TEAM Initiative and ONDC together can create a thriving, inclusive digital marketplace that empowers MSMEs across India.
